The unemployed in Cyprus increased by 90.3% in October 2020 compared to October 2019.
The Statistical Service issued a statement regarding the data of the unemployed in Cyprus.
The announcement shows that the number of unemployed rose to 31,487 in October 2020, marking an increase of 90.3%.
According to the data kept at the District Labor Offices, the number of registered unemployed at the end of October 2020, reached 31,487 persons. Based on seasonally adjusted data, which show the unemployment trend, the number of registered unemployed in October 2020 increased to 38,477 persons compared to 37,126 in the previous month. Compared to October 2019, there was an increase of 14,943 persons or 90.3%, which is mainly attributed to the sectors of accommodation and catering services (increase 5,283), trade (increase 2,441), transport and storage (increase 791), education (increase 710), professional, scientific and technical activities (increase 690) and administrative and support activities (increase 685).
It is pointed out that, according to the information of the Department of Labor, the comparison of the data from March 2020 onwards, with the data of previous months is not considered objective. This is due to the implementation by the Public Employment Service of the emergency measures announced by the Ministry of Labor, Welfare and Social Insurance for automatic renewals of the registered unemployed and new registrations of unemployed without physical presence in order to avoid the spread of the disease.
